In August 2013, We Won the War’s Tyler Del Pino and Ryan Cheung ignited the partnership they had both been looking for. Having been longtime fans of each other’s work, the time was right to culminate all their experiences and talent under one name with a singular goal and solitary purpose.
We Won The War’s music is a blend of infectious rock and pop sensibilities boasting hiphop production and top-lined with stadium-sized anthemic lyrical hooks that you cannot help but sing along to. Addictive choruses give fans a voice and something bigger than themselves to be part of. Picture artists like The Script and One Republic sitting at a table with One Direction and Katy Perry and they all agree they should combine forces to write music. The boys cannot deny their influences…and neither should you!
Ultimately the Canada-based duo (who met in high school and both studied music at university) have one simple goal: to write and produce music that resonates with the hearts and souls of their fans. Seems simple enough right? Well, easier said than done. But their goal stems from real experiences in their lives that have shaped who they are as writers and performers. “I was young, maybe 15 or 16… I was on a family vacation and my parents were playing this Beatles song in the car,” said Tyler. “I don’t know what came over me, but all I remember was fighting to hold back tears listening to whatever song it was. I made the decision then that I was going to spend my life making music.”
Ryan delivers on the production side of things pulling from his experience touring and performing with Canada’s top pop, rock and country acts. “I learned early on that music has enormous power. The biggest thrill for me is meeting fans after a show. Sometimes it’s the usual ‘how do ya do, thanks for the show’, but every once in a while you meet someone who had the worst day ever and coming to the show made all the difference in the world to them. That’s the power of music!”
Between the two of them, We Won the War has shared the stage with Hedley, Mariana’s Trench, Lights, Thousand Foot Krutch, Big Wreck, and Shawn Desmon and have worked with producers including Sean Housain (Hedley, Jessica Simpson), SA Trackworks (Elise Estrada, O-Town) and John Paul Peters (The Waking Eyes, Propagandhi) They’ve even had a song pitched to One Direction!
“We’ve spent a lot of time working for other people in the music business and finally both Ryan and I were like, ‘hey, we’ve got something to say too’,” Tyler says. “We both felt that something was missing and now we have found it!” says Ryan.
One day when both these guys were just kids they met in high school at a point in each of their lives when they decided they would dedicate themselves to music. But the friendship and the partnership didn’t actually start there. It’s kind of like that saying: “if you let it go and it comes back then it was meant to be”.
“All our friends were getting stable jobs and talking about retirement and we were like, ‘Dude, you’re just started your life–why are you worrying about 50 years from now?’” “Although it was really tempting to do exactly what everyone else was doing we had to take this risk,” says Ryan.
The name of the band stems from exactly that. Life is battle. Sometimes you break up with the person you are dating or you might have lost your job. Maybe you are in school and getting that next grade is that huge hurdle. For Tyler and Ryan it was making music and forming We Won the War that proves that that don’t have to walk the road everyone else travels. We Won the War means we have already conquered those things that stand in between where we are today and that better place we want to be. It stands for choosing your own path.
Both Tyler and Ryan grew up in heart of the continent–Winnipeg Manitoba, which probably accounts for their everyday guy vibe. When they are not in the studio or on tour you will find both these guys playing hockey and cheering on their home team. In fact, skates and hockey sticks have a permanent spot on their bus wherever they are traveling to next.
